The food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable. The sangria is excellent! The decor and ambience is nice for where the restaurant is located. It's almost hard to believe that this nice-looking restaurant is in the south bronx.

Love their food! Ive ordered PioPio for lunch in the city...but boy was I surprised to find out theres a Bronx location! I went for a late takeout order (10pm) 1 hr until closing time..and I was greeted & welcomed by the friendly (big plus!!) Most places act like they want to curse your mama..or they are trying to stay awake if you come in close to closing!

They always seems to do it the same way every time. The food is always made perfectly. The sauces and flavors are uniquely tasteful! The vibe, staff, and decor is on point. Diamond in the Rough! The green mysterious sauce with the chicken is great. If your with a small group, order the El Matador. It has a bit of almost everything from their small basic perfect menu. They do not except credit cards, only American express. So bring cash. I had to walk to the ATM once for not bringing cash.

This was a great place to eat after volunteering in the World Vision storehouse! I have been to other Pio Pio locations, and while it definitely out of the way, the food was incredibly delicious. I was with a group of 7 hungry people so we decided to order family style - we ordered the Matador Combo and the Lomo Saltado to share. There was more than enough food to satisfy our individual appetites. The Lomo Saltado was so satisfying - I am not a big beef eater, but it was marinated so well and the meat was tender. The avocado salad was also delicious and refreshing, given the warm summer day. Of course, I have to rave about the green sauce! Service was efficient and friendly. I can't wait to go to the Pio Pio in Manhattan!

The food is ok !!! It's nothing to get crazy about. I don't know why people travel so far from New Jersey or Connecticut to come eat at pio pio The sangria is really good. They have the nastiest calamari I've ordered It twice before and both the have given me soggy calamari and they charge $11 . I've been to so many other off the cut Peruvian restaurant that the food taste 10 times better than pio pio my honest opinion!!!!!

This place was pretty good. I loved the sangria. This place is a little pricey but they do give you big plates you can kind of split your meal into two.

being a native peruvian, this rating could be biased. The only thing I have tried ther is the peruvian chicken " pollo a la brasa".. chicken is smaller than usual, however its juicy , flavored and tasty. However fries are bad here, the original fries are crispy, and little salty, crunchy. Avocado salad is good, and dressing is fine. In regards to the green sauce that comes with chicken is not as good as should be. I have been in NJ , and had much better peruvian chicken, I still need to go to the pio pios in manhatan. I used to love the pardos chicken , that was the closest to original peruvian chicken but now is closed... I still come very often to this place since is close to home and as I said , chicken is good. neighboorhood is not the best, but I usually park outside and never had a problem, could be litle scary late night, but so far nothing happened to me..

MMmmmm , MMmmmmm good! I recently ordered from here for lunch after driving by and noticing this wonderful jewel was situated in an area which was hard to see. I came to love Pio Pio after trying it out in Jackson Heights and OMG its still soooo amazing. The chicken was so flavorful, the green sauce is amazing and just ask for extra they give you 3 for $1 but hey for that price i'll get $5 worth anytime lol.... The rice and fries are good but of course the star is the chicken... mmmm can't wait for another order lol

Dinner for four for $93. Make that a delicious, filling, totally satisfying dinner for four. A wonderful dining experience. This place seems to spring out of nowhere with its charming wood storefront. The location ain't great, but it was easy to find parking, and the place itself was quite appealing, even with paper table cloths. It was full at 6:30 on a Sunday night, and my family and I were the only white people in the place. Mom got a little nervous at the sight of two cops in bullet proof vests, but from the start the servers were incredibly friendly and attentive, and really made it an enjoyable dining experience. We got a pitcher of sangria (served in cute pio pio pottery), the matador combo, ceviche, and mozzarella salad. The ceviche and the chicken were the real standouts, bursting with flavor. The ceviche had a real kick to it, and had a ton of red onion, and I couldn't stop eating it, even though my mouth was on FIRE. The chicken was superb, as has been stated over and over. The sangria was tasty, and completely won me over when I discovered it had pineapple, the most delicious of all fruits. The side dishes were all quite palatable, though they paled in comparison to the aforementioned stars of the meal. It was very nice to have five side dishes included, for the sake of variety, and it gave us plenty to eat. The mozzarella salad, I didn't really try. I don't need Peruvian mozzarella when I live two blocks from Arthur Avenue, thank you. I was also interested in trying the gigantic seafood platter, but my brother has celiac and can't eat wheat, and most of it was fried in batter. Perhaps another time. My entire family loved the meal, our waiters, the salsa music, and the decor. A wonderful time!

Hot can of soda but they give u a cup Of ice. Food served quicky. Limited menu items to about 4 entrees. Food was good. If u don't tip or forget to they follow u out the door asking for one. They only accept American Express Credit Cards.

I used to love this place. Mott Haven to a foodie could be a wasteland if you don't know your way around. I was in heaven when this place opened up. Upscale decor, awesome food, what's not to love, right? That's what I thought when I decided to bring my friends who came for the weekend from CALIFORNIA for their last night in NYC for dinner. I was raving the entire way over there, which isn't that far since I live in walking distance. It turned out to be the worst dining experience ever. Upon arriving, I noticed there was a party on the second floor, and that it looked pretty packed from the outside, but we continued on until we were stopped by some guy standing in front of the doors who immediately greets us with "There are no tables ladies and gentlemen, no tables." This was very odd. I asked him if he worked there, he said yeah (I didn't believe him), I asked him how long the wait was, and he said 45 minutes. The first thing that immediately came to mind is that usually when I arrive at a restaurant, I'm greeted by a host/hostess who takes my name and how many in my party, and I'm given a wait time. Not some random guy in jeans and a bubble coat who tells me I'm to wait outside in 20 degree weather for nearly an hour. So far, not good. We go inside anyway, where we wait (awkwardly) beside tables of people eating, and waiters bustling past us to head upstairs to the party. I also notice 5 available tables, though most seated for 4, but since we were a party of 5, I figured it shouldn't be a big deal. Boy, was I wrong. After about what seemed like forever, an extremely rude waiter asks me how many, I tell him 5, and he tells me 20 min. Ok, no problem. 10 minutes later a party of 4 comes into the restaurant behind us, the same waiter approaches them immediately and seats them immediately (just in case you're thinking, they must have had a reservation, the answer is no, they didn't)......My friends are now asking why they were seated and we're still waiting, and we're looking at 4 empty tables. The waiter who told us 20 min. was not busy setting up a table for us, updating us on the status of us being seated, nothing. He continues to walk back and forth past us taking orders and bringing out food. Another waiter then asks us how many is in our party. At this point, I'm furious. I explain to him what just occurred, and after apologizing he assured me if I gave him another 5 minutes he would seat us. What happens next? You guessed it! 5 minutes came and went. Waiter no. 1 continues to ignore us, I finally try to get his attention as he walks by. I said excuse me 5 times. I promise you he was ignoring me on purpose, b/c when I finally stepped in front of him to prevent him from continuing to do so, his response was unbelieveable. I asked him why the other party was seated at a table we could've been given (as soon as we walked in). He shrugged. I asked him again. Again he shrugged. I asked him why he couldn't give us another table that was available and he said "It's impossible." I asked him why he couldn't just arrange 2 small tables for us, he again responded "It's impossible." I told him I wanted to speak with a manager, and he pointed towards the kitchen and walked away. We stood there for another 5-7 minutes, the manager never came, and the waiter continued to wait tables walking past us 3 or 4 times. Finally we were seated by waiter no. 2. I asked him to speak to the manager, (who'd been behind the bar the whole time, not more than 10 feet away from us.) I go to speak to him as my friends are seated (get this!) at a table for 4 (identical to the one the party who came after us were seated at, we were behind them) and they just added another chair, which is what we had asked for the entire time. The "manager" turned out not to be the manager at all and just the "guy in charge" that night. I got him (finally) to give me the name and number of the manager, as well as the rude waiter. The guy in charge also mentioned they always get complaints about that waiter (!). This is the icing on the cake though! I sit down at the table to join my friends, and when we open the menu, we notice in big red letters, American Express Only. !!!!!!!!!! We got up and left and had an amazing dinner at El Valle on 149th St., in walking distance, which I highly recommend for their great food, seating availability, and friendly staff! Goodbye Pio Pio. I loved your food, I raved about your food, but the horrible taste you have left in my mouth will not be easily removed by your delicious chicken.

When I'm hungry and headed for a night in I stop here for some chicken, tostones con mojito, salchipapa, & avocado salad--mix that with rice & beans and you have yourself a "matador combo." Btw, their salad dressing works well as mojito tambien! And they also have yuca fries! If you're a fan of Caridad, try this Peruvian delight!

Ive eaten here in the past and the food was great but I dont know what happened on my last visit. I had the lunch special 1/4 chicken with salad and sweet plantains. The chicken was good but the salad was not the best looke like it was sitting in the fridge for a while. The sweet plantains were horrible tasted like pure oil and were so dark in color. The waiter exchanged it for a new batch but that too was not tastey at all. I dont think ill go back to this spot im going to stick to the pio pio in manhattan thier food is always fantastic!

Ok, it's time for a fantastic review of Pio Pio! I'm so enthusiastic because I just had lunch here today and it was awesome. The meals here are served family style - which I always enjoy. Their specialty is Peruvian chicken. We got the Matador Combo. First they brought out avocado & tomato salad. Next rice and beans, mmmm, then fried plantations with a garlic sauce. After this they brought out a plate of fries w/ slivers of sausage on top, which was a little strange but still really tasty. Finally, the Peruvian chicken breast was served which was so tender, juicy and well seasoned. This was all served with delicious cilantro/spicy sauce that was good on everything! This restaurant has several locations throughout the city which I plan to visit since I don't find myself in the Bronx too often. But today was my first time to visit this borough and Pio Pio left a good impression on me!

A solid go-to place for yummy chicken and crunchy salad. Do try the sangria, it tastes great and pairs beautfully with the food. And then there is the spicy green sauce. Eating in is nice but taking out is good too as all my co-workers ogle the food and talk about how delicious it looks.

This outpost of Peruvian Pio Pio must be new, or incognito (not much info on Google), but it's a solid lunch choice in the area. It's rather upscale for the neighborhood-- very cute brick wall interior and lively music playing. The prices are a few bucks more than the Dominican place a few blocks away; the lunch special is $9.50 for basically the same amount of food. It is, however, served on a whimsical plate in a more restauranty environment. I got the special-- a quarter chicken and rice and beans along with a salad of ripe avocado, tomato, and other fixins for the table to share. The waiters speak enough English, and let you linger with no rush. The chicken was really good, the rice less so, but smother everything in their picante green sauce and you won't know the difference anyway.

3.5 stars I had lunch with a couple of co-workers since we were in the neighborhood. I was a bit skeptical but another coworker back at the office told me that the Peruvian Pio Pio was better than a very famous Dominican chicken place, that he loved and raved about, located in Washington Heights called El Malecon. If it was better than El Malecon, I had to try Pio Pio (even though I've never tried El Malecon). First off, I would've given this place 4.5 stars if it weren't two reasons: the infamous white paper over tablecloth nonsense and the rice dish. I realize that this is not a high-end restaurant, and I give them credit for trying to improve the interior. But I'm tired of eating off of large pieces of construction paper. Either have tablecloth or don't. There are plenty of nice restaurants that don't use tablecloth and the decor is still pleasing to the eye. The restaurant is located in a very distressed part of the South Bronx. Not all of SoBro looks this bad, contrary to what is protrayed in the media and by the crooked cops. Across the street is an abandoned piece of land. You wouldn't think you'll find a place as good as Pio Pio in this kind of area. I'm glad the owners of Pio Pio took a chance here. I hear that this place is rocking at night and the weekends. The moment you walk in, you don't feel like you're in SoBro. Feels like midtown Manhattan. You've got white tablecloth-adorned tables (ruined by the white paper tops), brick walls (not as rustic as other places), and an open kitchen in the back left corner. The place is spacious and there's a party room upstairs. Don't get me wrong -- this space could look better, but I've never been to a restaurant that looked like this in SoBro. A pleasant surprise. If you eat here before 4:00 pm weekdays, there's a great lunch special for $9.50. You get your quarter pollos alla brasa (rotisserie chicken - choice of white or dark), avocado salad, a side dish (fries, maduros aka fried sweet plantains, rice & beans, tostones aka fried green plantains, or fried yucca), and a canned soda. I chose the white, rice & beans, and sprite. In fact, all of us chose the rice & beans as the side dish. And we got a maduros for the table. The chicken is seasoned well. Mine was slightly over-salted but that's okay; better salted than bland. They serve this green sauce with the chicken. It's EXCELLENT. I'm not sure what it is. It's got a little bit of kick to it. I'm sure it's dairy based. It makes a world of a difference. The rice & beans were just okay. The beans were very runny, like the ones you buy in the can while the rice was bland. With me, rice has to be either plain or well seasoned. This yellow-orange variety was in between so I didn't care for it too much. The maduros were very oily. I've had fried plantains before and it shouldn't be this oily. Maybe the chefs didn't drain the plantains well enough. Serving the plaintains over paper towels or some other absorbent materials could've done the trick. The avocado salad was good. The service is good although the waiter didn't ask how everything was during our meal. It's not like the place was busy. There was only one other occupied table. For those that are wondering, "pio pio" is the sound a chicken makes. It's similar to what Americans define as "cluck cluck."

seriously, people, I keep reading reviews from folk who are scared of the neighboorhood, calling it frightening. I'm pretty Caucasian myself here, and have never had a problem in Mott haven, have family in the neighborhood and no one will bother you walking from the train to the restaurant. The comment about needing to put a serious, mean face on when getting off the train is just absurd. Go about your business, walk to Pio Pio, on cypress and 138th and you will be in for a great surprise,,beautiful building, and the food gets a thumbs up. They make this seafood dish which is fried (so if you are on health kick don't try it), with yuca fries, simply excellent and different type of entree. avocado salad gets a thumbs up as well. Prices are reasonable, a 28 dollar entree can easily feed three to four people. There is also one of these on the UES, but very small, the one in Mott Haven is much bigger. Highly recommend, worth the trip.

Went for the lunch special--1/4 chicken (got the breast), salad, tostones and seltzer--grand total $10.00 and come change (with tax). The salad was beautiful...lettuce (minimal), carrots, celery (sounds wierd but it works), avocado (waiter said to would be extra but he must have forgotten), tomatos and cucs. Everything was sliced very thin (think mandoline) ...this along with the vinigrette (delish) really works. The chicken was moist, tostones cooked well (but needed some salt). The actual serving plate was HUGE (left me thinking I would be hungry after) but I was completely satiated even to the point where I didn't want dinner 6 hours later (not an easy thing to accomplish wwith me). Other tables had sangria (looked good but I had a bad experience in the past so I steer clear now). All in all a good food experience and excellent service but nothing to go out of your way for. Right near the 6 train so very accessible. Maybe I'm used to the 'hood but I wasn't bothered at all with the location. Stop acting 'skairt gringos and go get some decent food. Of note, they only take cash and American Express.

The food was amazing. At first, I thought the dishes were expensive, but the waiter informed us that the dish was enough for 3-4 people. We decided to go with the chicken, rice and beans, salad, salchipapa, fried plantains... All of this was one menu option. We also had the arroz Chaufa which was great. The restaurant is family friendly, I wouldn't recommend going alone. The price is just right for all the food that you get. The menu does not offer a great variety, but I can imagine that all of the items on the menu are delicious. Also, our food was served in less than five minutes. The waiter was friendly and the place was very clean. The location is not the best, and there is street parking which can be a little inconvenient. I'm looking forward to tasting the ceviche next time.

Disclaimer: If you're looking for a restaurant where you can either share a meal with 1 or 2 orders or if you're in the mood for "family style" plating for a large group. Recently, I came back to this Pio Pio location to enjoy dinner with a big group. There was plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant and it's located near a couple of major highways if you're traveling by car. Does it seem a bit out of place for this section of the Bronx? Absolutely, but I digress... Now, back to my experience, our group consisted of about 10 people and we ordered the following: - Matador Combo: This combo consisted of various plates including their famous rotisserie chicken (juicy/flavorful), yellow rice, red beans, tostones (twice fried plantains), salchipapas (fries with fried small pieces of sausage) and an avocado salad (with lettuce, cucumbers, & tomatoes). For two people enjoying a meal, this combo is PERFECT! If you go to Pio Pio one of the top recommended dishes is their famous chicken, which isn't dry or bland and that you can top off with their famous spicy green sauce. - Arroz Chaufa: This was like a fried rice dish which had rice, eggs, onions, and comes with the meat of your choice. We opted for chicken. - Lomo Saltado: Lomo saltada (or stirred-fried beef) consists of filet mignon strips, spices, red onions, parsley, peppers, tomatoes, french fries, and a side of white rice. Again, a great dish to share for two people and the beef was delicious! - Jalea: A seafood platter consisting of shrimp, calamari, and squid topped off with red onions, corn, spices, and sauce. Although this didn't come with a side, it was my go to for the night. I, personally, am a huge fan of seafood, especially when it's a mix of my faves! I had a great time and would definitely come back here more often.

I love this location and the staff. We brought grandma in for her birthday and she felt like a queen! We had the Sangria roja, Ceviche Mixto, Matador Combo, Tres Leche. Sangria was great, grams was very happy, mom could barely walk. Ceviche was unbelievable! Matador was perfection, why are their fries so good!??! Tres leche... oi vei. That was bad, I love dessert but just couldn't eat it. I would go back and I would order everything again except for the cake.

After deciding to try Pio Pio after hearing people rave about it, I was very disappointed. I received the wrong order and when I called they left me on hold for almost 20 mins. They even blamed the delivery guy and are taking it out of his pay when it was obviously not his fault. Totally unfair. After getting the right order, I was excited to try the mixed ceviche and their fruit ice cream and it was a total let down. The ceviche had more garlic then actual seafood and the ice cream did not have actual fruits. Not worth $70 for mediocre food which I can get at El Valle with better service. I will not be ordering again.

Came here last night with my honey. After leaving the Bronx Brewery, we looked for a Spanish restaurant. We passed Caridad "Express". No thank you. Next...driving past Cypress Avenue, saw the words Pio Pio. Perfect! Didn't even know the Bronx had a location! I've never been! So we went, just like that and said let's try it. Had a whole rotisserie chicken, with an Avocado salad and Tostones. The chicken was nice and tender. The salad was lightly dressed, and the tostones were huge (came with garlic sauce). Because we came from the Bronx Brewery, we didn't indulge further on alcohol, but the Sangria did look good. My lack of a fifth star was the price. $16 for a whole chicken. Kinda pricey I think for the neighborhood. Go figure. Oh well next time...

I went to this Pio Pio location with my Bf & we were seated easily. It all went smooth Bc it wasn't very full that day.As we ate the bus boy who name stared with an E. I can't remember it clearly. He would come by once my order was at the table & only pour my pitch of White Sangria & add water to our glass & my Bf too.Let me add very serious throughout his services too.I guess he was having a bad day since it was so busy.Wink Wink!!;)We finished our meal & my Bf asked me to add the total & tip to the bill & I did.I leave it on the table & went to the bathroom. When am walking home with my Bf he tells me that the busboy told him that the tip wasn't enough.I wish I knew sooner but my bf knew how I would of reacted. My Bf is a calm person & just added a few bucks more. I just feel that a customer only should give what they feel is best for the services. It was rude & business should not be conducted that way. If that's the case put gratuity in your bill.I did enjoy the food but at the end I left with a very sour taste in my mouth.I will not return because the way business are today we need to appreciate everyone who enter the doors & treat them the very best. Its the only way people will return from near & far.

Wasn't sure what to get for dinner. I had forgot there was a pio pio restaurant in the Bronx always used to going to queens. Read in yelp and swung by and ordered the matador. So much food and my husband was so happy with the taste. The restaurant is nice inside too. Can't go wrong with pio pio in the Bronx great food.

I love pio pio... I posted before.... I ordered today after not ordering since my last post AND. I am sorry but I am very very disappointed. I place an order over the phone for 3 lunch specials. 1 of them which happen to be mines go figure had the wrong meat. It went down hill from there. The chicken was dry and the wing part was so over cooked I couldn't eat it. That's my complaint but my 2 coworkers also complainted. Seems like the chicken portion is way smaller than we remember, the rice and beans were dry. Sorry go say but I think this will be my last visit....

Valentines Day dinner: The menu was obviously shortened for the VDay crowd - which is expected and never a problem at other restaurants... What disappointed me the most was the lack of 'excitement' or variety in the shortened menu; lomo salteado, a fried seafood mix and like two other non appealing entrees. Our dinner came out before our pitcher of sangria (o_0) - the red wine sangria was delicious. And understandably; it was Vday, so the service was rushed and curt. It was my first time at Pio Pio and I was honestly surprised to find a decent spot in the South Bronx... On Valentines Day. I'll give them another shot on a regular thursday.

I wasn't expecting to find a Pio Pio in the Mott Haven section of The Bronx but it turns out it was just as good as its other locations around the city. Nice ambiance and good food. I opted for the Chaufa Rice and Red Sangria to bring in the summer. The service was very good. Overall, the experience was pleasantly.

Does everyone else wonder why the take out orderocof rice and beans its larger than the one you get a at the restaurant? And also when i ordered the lono saltado i litteraly got 2lbs of vegetables and a few strips of the actual lomo and some fries. I love their food but prices could be better but im ot paying 60+ dollars on delivery to get conned on their portions

The food is amazing with a cozy ambiance. I definitely have some more items to try but I'd suggest getting the Lomo Saltado & the Matador Combo. Lomo Saltado - Much better with Yellow rice. Matador Combo - Meant for two... Trust me, you wont be disappointed. Oh and how could I forget...The green sauce they serve literally goes with everything ! I'd be willing to bet that it would make the Inca Cola taste better! Parking Parking Parking :-( .....That part isn't so fun.

Their Sangría was great... Service was a bit off, after being seated and given our menus the server took way too long to come back and take our order, but the food didn't take long to come out. i had the ceviche Limeño which i enjoyed but my bf didn't like his ceviche mixto. He said the lemon was too concentrated and it over powered the taste.. The location makes you think twice when visiting here but the interior is really cute..

The Sangria in this place is to die for! The food was great, just bring in a sweater there AC is extremely high. I guess that's great if you like the cold temp. For the location the place is pretty trendy. I was surprised. Will defianately go again with my sweater :-)

The food was good the server was kind of rude and the tables made me feel a little cramped the down side is that the menu does not have the price on what your buying . So when you get that tab don't be surprised because they are expensive here .

Honestly the food is great... Service is kind of cold. The waiters aren't too friendly but the food makes up for that and more, hence the 5 stars!! My wife and I always order "El Matador" with a pitcher of their homemade sangria... To die for.

Food was excellent. The red sangria was exellent. Our server was terrible. First he points at my female cousin while addressing her. Then he did not check on us the majority of the time we were there. Another server was more attentive to us. The manager also was nice. Then our server dropped our "To-go" plate on the table and never asked us if we wanted any coffee or dessert. This place would have been 4 stars, maybe 5, if it were not for our horrible server. He was a younger male, very light skinned, black hair, about 5,11 in his early to mid 20s.

Terrible empanadas de pollo for the price! One they were small, second they were cold in the middle (microwave) for a Restaurant really! Third I found a chicken bone in them... what they don't know how to make sure so not one client chokes on it. Terrible. I will never return and don't recommend it either!

Delicious food but tables are not comfy for tall people like myself I found the tables to be too close to one another n small my dinner barely fit on the table otherwise service was great n the food truly delicious.

My favorite Pio Pio location ever. The food was perfect. I'm always enamored with their juicy and well seasoned chicken. It's always pricey in my opinion but it's worth the price. The sangria is way too small for the price. I love the fact that they do have a family atmosphere and the food is set for that exact occasion. So don't plan on going alone, if you want your bang for your buck take another person.

How should I put this... This place is probably one o the best eateries in the hood. Is not really easy to get decent food around, therefore is a joy ordering delivery from them. Their timing is ok and the price is well known for being fair. Recommended

Good food, great location ,waiters are on point with there service . Literally around the corner from where I live . Consider me a regular at this place Try the matador combo , their shrimp soup is amazing as well . I usually get the red sangria pitcher for myself "it's that good".

Great service. Tasty food. Clean. Sadly, music much too loud. Too many screaming children that parents nor management did nothing to settle down. The soup had chicken and bones in it with the corn chunks still on the cob. Bit too pricey as well. $3 for a can of coke.... Really?!?

Pio Pio is always solid. While I would give the one in Murray Hill 4.5 stars, I am knocking this one down to 4 stars because they don't have the half chicken to go option. Sometimes you just don't need a whole chicken.

Well first off no enthusiasm within the work staff what so ever, the server throwing plates down like he wished he didn't have to and noticed it with other customers as well same thing as he picked up the plates aggressively with attitude. As for the food over priced but tasty chicken was moist and fried plantains were big and tasty papa halauicina was served with hot potato traditionally served cold no go for me...i felt like they were doing me a favor rather than me doing them a favor paying $60 customer should never feel like this. They don't even know how to guide you even if you were a block from their restaurant.

First off I just want to say that not all Pio Pios I would rate like this. This is the second time going to the Bronx location and it has gone from bad to worse. We were there over the memorial day weekend, trying to relax and enjoy the weekend but was terribly disappointed. First we were seated under a staircase although there were empty tables, the manager didn't ask if were ok with this, but ok fine. We ordered a pitcher of red sangria, when we got it, there were more fruit in our glasses as opposed to in the pitcher. Ordered the sweet plantains, what we got was a blob of a black greasy mess. Our waiter was non existent, then during our meal, the manager is speaking to a party next to us, and not only does he turn his back to us without acknowledgement, but he bends over so all we seeing is his behind as we eat. Again no type of acknowledgement. We had to fill our own glasses of sangria as our waiter was never around. At this point we just want to leave, so we get the check to pay, being very disappointed I decided to leave a very disagreeable gratuity. When the nonexistent waiter came for the check he actually had the nerve to question it. My belief is that management leads by example, and the rude and discourteous service was a clear example of management at this Pio Pio.

Love it! The place is the diamond in the rough! I mean the neighborhood isn't the best. I would not travel there by train unless I am with a few people. If you aren't paying attention you can probably walk by this place. So pay attention. The decor is beautiful, warm, and inviting! The staff greets you with a smile. The portions are great! Enough for two people. First time visiting we ordered the Peruvian Combo, one whole mama juanita's rotisserie chicken served with french fries and avocado salad. We also order a side of Tostones! It was simple delicious! Being a Latina sometimes we attend places ready to critic the seasoning lol! In other words... sometimes the seasoning is bland but not PIO PIO! To drink we ordered a pitcher of Sangria and well lets just say not long after that we had ourselves another pitcher! Second time visiting I ordered Camarones Cuzco. It's shrimp sautéed in garlic, shallots, cilantro, white wine, and aji amarillo sauce, served with yellow rice topped with salsa criolla. It was simply delicious. It was so delicious I didn't share. If you want to try something other than their chicken which has a great reputation but are indecisive, go for the Camarones Cuzco! You won't regret it. To drink I had a glass of Sangria. :)

Wow, really nice to see one of these in the BX. It's in an obscure location but rivals all the others in decor, food and service. I'm coming back with the familia!

I've been to the Pio Pio in Queens and the one in Midtown and was a little hesitant in trying the one in the South Bx, but I would have to say Ive been here about 5x and this one does not disappoint. I particularly like this one because it is so quiet unlike the one in Queens. I absolutely LOVE their ceviche here, whether its the regular ceviche or the mixto, both are amazing with their famous green sauce. I wish it was a little cheaper since I come here a lot. Their chicken is ok tastes great with green sauce. I normally order the matador combo which comes with chicken and a bunch of sides. Their avocado salad is soo good and refreshing. I also love their salchipapa. Compliment your meal with a nice pitcher of red sangria and you will have perfection :) The restaurant is usually empty unless its weekend or a holiday, but their service is great. They also pretty quick with take out orders. Parking might be a little difficult around here though. I recommend not coming here too late at night especially during the summer time because it is a high crime area. I will definitely be back again and again.

Last night I went to PIO PIO in the Bronx and I had the best experience of My life with my server Benjamin Maya, he was so attentive and made sure we were well taken care of . He went above and beyond . We will defintley be back for sure . He is a credit to your restaurant .

I used to love this place. Yeah the location isn't great but they do deliver and you can get takeout. I don't know where they started going so wrong. Their food is so inconsistent. I had to stop eating there because more often than not I found myself having to reheat chicken that looked weird and getting sick anyway. However the service is consistent. It's horrible. Look out because they will make up new policies. For example: they will give you dark meat when you ask for white because the kitchen has too much dark meat. Oh and they can charge you extra for this also. The customer is always wrong. This is why I'm not eating there anymore. It's like going to visit mean grandma's house where you don't get what you asked for and you get scolded. No thanks.

Huge disappointment! Very unprofessional, bad service and over priced for mediocre food. Was served a rotten avocado, they refused to take it off the bill, $20 for lomo saltado in the south bronx, and it was mostly tomato and barely any meat, and we tried ordering 3 appetizers that they didn't have that evening. If the management isn't on top of inventory imagine what else they aren't on top of. Beware, don't waste your time or money

Great food. The avocado salad tasted amazing even though I watched me unwrap it from Saran as it was being brought to us. The waiter was the worst waiter I've ever seen. Like so bad I didn't want to leave a tip and I have worked in the food industry. The shrimp soup was amazing and the egg cooked in it made it so delicious. I wish the shrimp had been peeled but it was still a great lunch. Final notes of advice : go for the food don't expect service

This is my favorite pio pio--not overcrowded and ridiculously loud like it's meatpacking counterpart or crazy tiny like its UES counterpart. The service is great, food is consistently delicious, and sangria is AWESOME. Nobody does it like Pio Pio and this particular location nails it all around!

  • Eve H.

I am a FAN of Pio Pio, however this location is my least favorite. They are inconsistent with their yucca fries, mojo sauce, and even the special green sauce! Why?! They cut the yucca fries so thin you think you are eating hard french fries :( I am convinced that the 44th street location in Manhattan is by far the best and most consistent in terms of food - it is always delicious. This Cypress location is getting a time out from me...

They have some crazy good chicken here!!!! I tried the original Pio Pio way back in the 90's in Queens and their chicken and green sauce have not changed a bit. I had the lunch special. A quarter chicken, mixed salad with avocado and I chose rice and beans for my side. You get all that, plus a beverage for $9.50. The chicken is so juicy and flavorful. Please eat the skin. That is where all the flavor is. I like do douse my chicken with their green sauce. The green sauce is so good. It just adds even more flavor to the super flavorful chicken. Salad was really tasty and tangy. They could have used a salad spinner though for the lettuce. It was a little on the wet side. Beans were pretty decent as well. But if you add more of that green sauce to the beans, wow! It made the beans fantastic. If rice and beans aren't your thing, you can choose to stones, french fries, fried sweet plantains or fried yucca. The neighborhood is really, really bad, but there were lots of cops in the restaurant, so it was safe enough.

  • Gabriella K.

The food range from good to subpar. The avocado salad and seafood dish were tasty and fresh. The other entrees chicken, rice etc, were so-so to tasteless. The server was NOT attentive. I don't know if it was due to him having so many tables or he just provides awful services to customers. I expected better quality food and service given the reviews and I was just let down. I would not be returning can find better food establishments for the same price point without the aggravation.

Have been to a few of the Pio Pio locations and this one is no different. Quality Peruvian at a good price. So for those who have that it's in the Bronx so it'll be worse mindset fall back. Pio Pio by design seems to have a small menu. They concentrate on a few well-known Peruvian menu items so this is a good place to be introduced to Peruvian cuisine. Some locations might have a bit more to offer menu wise but really they are known mostly for that Chicken and that green sauce! Choripapa, Jalea, the Pio whole chicken , and the ceviche are all good choices. To drink order the Chicha Morada(its non alcoholic but has a nice spicy/sweet flavor) or some Sangria. The decor is brick and simple but it works. It's not a big place by any means, it is cozy. If you come on a busy day like weekends you might have to wait a little to be seated. Parking is fairly easy to find. As for the neighborhood you'll be fine. Really only reason to be there if your not from the neighborhood is Pio Pio so just don't linger around if your worried about safety. That being said mott haven in general has improved a lot. Like a lot of the Bronx these days the old scary reputation doesn't quite jive anymore with the current reality. This is a great spot for Bronxites craving some Peruvian food. Not worth making the trip if you don't live in the Bronx since there are more than a few Pio Pio's now.

I have been to Pio Pio at 3 locations: lower Manhattan, Queens, and in the Bronx. In my opinion, the one in the Bronx is the 2nd best, with Manhattan coming in 3rd (small and mediocre food) and the original Queens location coming in 1st (renovated & looks like a 5 star restaurant environment). The restaurant in the Bronx location is where I am a regular at because I live about 10 minutes (by car) from their location. My mom LOVES Pio Pio and is a big fan of their seafood combo. I personally love their chicken, green sauce, maduros, and avocado salad. Their red sangria (wine) is perfectly mixed with an assortment of fruit. I tend to get their Peruvian soda (Inca Cola) which is just their version of champagne cola, but it is delicious and has a smooth taste to it. My mom just has hot tea which I'm surprised they serve there. I'm not really a fan of their mini sausages and fries (to each their own I guess). I'm telling you though, anything on their menu tastes great when you mix their special green sauce to it! LOL The ambience to the restaurant is very nice and they have a very cultural theme there. The Spanish music they play is great as well. The neighborhood is not as bad as people have stated in these reviews. On the next block there are a bunch of townhouses and I guarantee you the people in this area are working class people and not stereotypical crackheads looking to rob any naive "gringos" or anyone that resembles that look! LOL So yes there is a Chinese Food Store next to Pio Pio and a ghetto looking bodega near that, but nothing that will cause any danger to anyone not from the area; so GET OVER IT and come through for a great dining experience...

I just paid $15 for a little bowl of soup that is literally a chicken thigh floating in broth with a few pieces of carrot and two tiny chicken empanadas that were full of BONES! My coworkers come here for the cheap lunch special and love it but gambling by deviating from that selection is NOT worth your time or moneyq.

I ate here twice during a mission trip to St. Ann's Episcopal Church Freedom School this summer, once in the restaurant and once take out. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not much on Latin American fare, but I tried several things as my group ordered family style. I enjoyed the avocado salad (watch out for the dressing though- its wasabi and HOT!!!) and the pio pio chicken is delicious. The atmosphere is quaint and pretty nice. We had good service, esp. considering we had all our luggage to store while we ate. Overall, I was satisfied with my first meal in the Bronx.

Love this place! I ordered a Matador Combo, with a half chicken, just for myself, not realizing how much food they were going to bring! I ended up with lunch for the following day. The tostones are AMAZING! The green sauce and the sauce they serve with the tostones are equally amazing. Of course the chicken is awesome too. :)

I had read about the hype about Pio Pio and was jealous (always the last to try the new stuff). I had eaten chicken in Peru and was excited to try this. First time I came to this location, I elected for take out. I ordered the matador meal and an extra side of maduros. The restaurant decor was ok but nothing fancy. As I waited for my order I looked around and saw the yellow walls and a few paintings. The tables have cloth and paper... As if I was going to eat crabs. Advice for first timers taking the subway: If you exit the 6 train (Cypress Avenue station) you will be on 138th street. Walk away from the highway (I-278). Pass the Iglesias de Dios (church of god) and at the intersection is Cypress Ave. Make a right (at some dry cleaners). You will pass a Pioneer supermarket, a "No 1 Wok" (that a bold claim) Chinese takeout spot and alas find Pio Pio. Remember to put on your best angry face (I think of my 401k performance or the New York Knicks), maintain a steady power walk, follow my directions and you won't feel like a wimpy gringo in the hood. Take out on the subway was a bad idea. As the wonderful aromas penetrated my nostrils, I wanted to rip the bag open and shovel bits into my mouth. The food was worth the wait. The chicken, married with the tostones, salad, rice, beans, salchipapas (chopped hot dogs and fries) and maduros were a winning combination. Pio Pio's food is delicious and a welcome addition to the Bronx. If you live closer to another Pio Pio branch, don't go out of your way to come to this one. IFTHP 3+

Awesome Decor...Food is great!!! at first I thought why a bit pricey for rice and chicken/shrimp/beef but wow the Plate you get of food is insanse!! The whole chicken is finger licking good and huge as well. Avocado salad is plentiful and seasoned to perfection. Yuca fries is a must and another huge plate. Will definitely be going back and telling friends family even my worst enemy lol

How can I not review my favorite place to eat?? I was introduced to this place about 10 years ago in Jackson Heights Queens. This"mini chain" is a place you go with friends, family, significant etc.... Food is excellent! Service is great and the atmosphere is what makes you go back. The Bronx locale was needed. I go about 2xs a month and now i see not only the neighborhood folk, but hipsters. I've become a regular, so when the waiters see me, they look out for me.

So long as you don't mind going to a somewhat frightening neighborhood, or you are from this neighborhood, this is a diamond in the rough! The decor and the feel of the restaurant is definitely one of a nice restaurant, despite it being right next to a greasy Chinese restaurant with the suspect name of NUMBER 1 WOK. The food is quality, and in large portions. The chicken was very succulent. Even white meat, which I care less for because of how dry it usually is, was moist and delicious! We also got the seafood platter, which is a HUGE amount of fried seafood. 5 of us went to eat, and we ordered one of the chicken combos and the seafood combos, as well as a plate of rice and beans (VERY delicious, btw), and a plate of sweet plantains, which was more food than we could finish, and we paid about 12-14 dollars per person! Very good place for sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed the avocado salad, and the fries were solid. It went SO well with the green sauce we used for fries rather than ketchup. I need more green sauce! The only thing is the location. I will definitely go to Pio Pio again, but next time I will be trekking to one of their Manhattan locations.

I've never sat down for food but this location is SO efficient with take out orders. I've never stood there for more than half a hour even on a busy night. Typical order that two can share with tummies FULL and happy: - Tostones are smashed into monster sizes and provided with secret spicy sauce. - Half a chicken is always bangin' with taste, never burnt! - Salad comes with glistening garlic sauce. Please note that this location doesn't have as much "variety" of choices vs the 94th and Amsterdam/other city locations, I'm sure. I should really try "other" things but I've never been disappointed with the three above. What's your GO-TO meal?

    (5)
  • Lily S.

My sis recommended this place and finally got to try it. I'm always happy when I see green creamy spicy sauce and now I have a new favorite, their white garlicky vinegar sauce to go with the chicken. They give you a good portion so be sure to share! Rice, chicken, tostones, beans and you should be good, We got the hot dogs and fries too but I think they were on the dry side. But chicken is the must have if you don't get anything else.

I just moved to BX and this restaurant made me feel right at home! The food is amazing and it's served family style, which I love! I am a sucker for rice, beans and avocado salad! It's absolutely amazing and so comforting! Prices are great because you can split the meal with a friend! Try it, trust you won't be disappointed.

my second time around...the first time was a good time. food was on point and the speed they serve it is amazing..so i was doubtful that it was like this all the time. Well, it was actually faster than last time. the place was packed and still they managed to serve some delicious chicken with green spicy sauce ( secret sauce), rice, beans, salchipapas (french fired and fried mini-hotdogs, avocado salad, tostones, aka the Matador Meal plan and Peruvian beer for 3. all that was 48 us bucks.. thats not bad at all. The area where the place is is kind of iffy.. well not nice at all, but some times you got to take risk to get some good food . The servers and host are really good, they explain everything if you dont know what it is... PS: you can reserve the 2nd floor for private events. I will definitely come back again.

I went to Pio Pio on a Saturday night. I was a little adamant of not going to the South Bronx Pio Pio location but to save gas and time i decided on this location for my mother in law's bday. I am really glad I did our waiter Rodolfo was very attentive. The food came extremely fast and it was delicious we ordered the Matador, Lomo and the Sangria. The waiter's were very helpful and prepared the cake we bought with candles and played a Spanish version of The Happy Birthday song. I am definitely retuning soon. FYI you forget you are in the South Bronx until you set foot back outside
